@desertbusforhope is live and ongoing this week, r @desertbusforhope is live and ongoing this week, raising money for @childsplaycharity! Many items up for auction/giveaway are donated by crafters & artists; I’ve done it a few times now and it’s so cool to make something fun, complex, and a little silly, but also see it transformed into real impact. It’s up for giveaway sometime between 6 pm-12 on Monday!

This year I made a playing card deck based on Balatro— If you’re not into video games, or this game in particular, just know that Balatro is a game where you play….weird poker, and there’s 150 different Joker designs integral to play. So I made a regular 52-card deck, but each card face is a unique die cut from this parent sheet of a 10x16 lino, such that an icon representing every joker appears at least once in the deck. Fun challenge! Actually kind of stupid simple to execute when it gets down to it. I have not worked smarter here, only harder 😂

I cut the pips to keep the faces tidier; the rest of the faces & colophon text are set in Century Schoolbook and Bradley. The Schoolbook is a personal favorite that I’ve used plenty, but the Bradley doesn’t come up as much and yet is very special. It’s a pretty old & worn case, came from my great-grandfathers shop on my dads side.

Also check out the other donations & the stream! It’s 24 hours a day of goofing and very cool art & community ✨

Aren't these COOL. I mean the cars were cool obvio Aren't these COOL. I mean the cars were cool obviously, I wish there weren't 12 scientifically backed reasons to make cars in the new boring blunt-nose shapes. But the ads themselves. The hand-drawn illustrations. 👌👌 Incredible.

Someone brought these in with the original paper covers, very understandably worn, and wanted a simple re-binding that removed the old rusty staples, protected them, and made them easier to handle every once in a while without more damage. I made it a little more complicated by not being satisfied with the book cloth readily available, but finding a perfect red & blue in a line of majority linen at the fabric store. Absolutely worth the fuss to back the fabric—the colors are just the right shades, and the surface a little softer than most book cloth I could get in a similar timeframe.
if only it were turning out to be a little more an if only it were turning out to be a little more annoying, less rewarding, to make book cloth out of fabric scraps, i wouldn't be tempted to keep going back to the fabric store :( but those baskets full of fat quarters, you can just stick a hand in and get a fistful of FUN.

anyway i got pretty low on these reloadables, especially the minis, so I did a bigger batch and now I've made space for a separate fabric/book cloth storage system. it got to be too much to keep with the other miscellaneous materials. i am becoming my parents, grandparents, etc.
I usually let the text sit longer, go back to it, I usually let the text sit longer, go back to it, edit more, before I set anything. But I guess it’s appropriate that here I, mm, upchucked it all in a note over about two hours, let it devolve into incoherency, and didn’t mess around trying to over-work it the next day. Just let it be what it was & set.

Anzeigen Grotesk, Alternate Gothic, bulk in Tannhauser, which is one of my favorite faces for its own qualities but also for sentimental reasons, being one of my mother’s favorites first. I’ve got well over enough for this—probably three full founts in the case—although not quite enough Didot spacing, not in the whole shop :/ and no larger sizes of the face, so it’s tough to implement in most commissioned projects.

Anyway! This is sort of a coming out for me in an extremely anticlimactic way. I’ve been answering when asked and introducing myself to new people as such for a while but frankly I didn’t meet new people that often until recently, and mostly didn’t mention it to people who knew me already. Just been percolating on it. Didn’t feel pressed before to change my way of being around anyone or make any prints about it. Then it did press, sort of suddenly & strangely. Lots of reasons for that I could speculate on but shan’t.

Always grateful to anybody who bothers to read all the dang words I put on one of these, it’s a lot, and I’ve seen several responses to it now, all very gratifying or sweet or funny or kind in their own way. As usual I worried that this meant nothing outside my own head, but certainly it’s proven to be one of those things where, in being specific to myself as possible, it’s come back around to being something other people can see in themselves.

cooper black, venus extended, etc. wanted to do so cooper black, venus extended, etc. wanted to do something quick and a bit rougher before Wayzgoose, and then felt like i had to wait to post until it got a little sunny again.

the sun is hand-inked with orange and fluorescent red, impression pulled without register in the Poco proofing press, yellow wash slapped on with a brayer. i know i can be a little—uptight, as a printer. this is baby steps 😆 but i'm feeling out for the new freedoms i will enjoy, and i like these a lot.

Had these as a little die cutting demo at the Wayz Had these as a little die cutting demo at the Wayzgoose last week but there’s a small stack leftover so I finished them out for the Etsy store! Related thoughts and style to some other stuff I’ve done. All part of, hmm, studies for a larger project I’ve been percolating on for a while. Anyway if you’d like the tooth that came out along with the little print there’s a button for that :)

Set in Caslon 471.

I asked if I could print more for the shop and he said yes; I asked if I could print them in jolly rancher colors and he said, I said…….you could……print them…….. which was not a no :))

Doing my dang best to finish some new things for @ Doing my dang best to finish some new things for @tacomaisforlovers this Sunday (27th)! This lizard is a wood block my grandmother carved something like 30 years ago, pre-arthritis. Love his funny little eyes.

The block was made for some kind of fabric printing—we haven’t found any samples of it to know what kind for sure—but anyway it isn’t particularly planed or level. I fixed what I could in the bed but even then there’s one toe that needs some touching up by hand. Pretty simple on the type form but I took some extra time with it, feeling picky about decorative pieces that go best together.

I always test the QR code to make sure it reads in color and, pleasant surprise, I found no issues with this one on a new-ish phone or ancient iPad.

(I found a couple different versions of punctuation for this excerpt, but the recipient had if I recall correctly first read the poem in a book they found in a used bookstore, and provided a transcription from that copy.)

The vacuum, my bestie, my buddy 😆 I suppose I could’ve backtrimmed all 4.5m sheets on all sides but I’m pretty sure that still would’ve taken longer than pulling out the vacuum between every pass.
Last minute restock again for the final sale of my Last minute restock again for the final sale of my season! I’ll be @thegrocerystudios from 2-5 pm this Saturday & Sunday, along with a bunch of other artists there AND @freshmochiart just across the street!

These little mini reloadable journals have been doing well which is great since they’re very fun to make :) I get to utilize all sorts of cloth & paper scraps & experiment with making one of a kind patterns. The books are sized so you can make your own reloads really easily at home—one signature is just 1 piece of 8.5x11 printer paper cut in quarters, 2 signatures/book, easy 32-page refresh. You don’t even really need to sew the signatures, even though I do; loose leaf they’ll stay in the cords just fine.
